Congress established the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship {Barry Goldwater Scholarship} and Excellence in Education Program in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the United States Senate. 

 

The Foundation’s mission is to provide a steady supply of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students pursuing careers in these fields. 

 

Each scholarship covers eligible undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

 

Applicants must be a sophomore or juniors planning to pursue a research career in natural science, mathematics, or engineering to be considered for a nomination.

 

About the Scholarship

 

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed organization set up on November 14, 1986, by Public Law 99-661. 

 

The Goldwater Scholarship Program is named after Senator Barry Goldwater of the United States. 

 

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship was created to assist and inspire outstanding students to pursue careers in the physical sciences, engineering, and mathematics. 

 

The Goldwater Scholarship is the most prestigious undergraduate award in these fields.

 

Who Can Apply?

 

Full-time matriculated sophomores and juniors who meet the above academic requirements and wish to pursue a research career in a natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering are eligible to apply. 

 

Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. To be considered for a nomination, interested and eligible students must be nominated by Rensselaer and must complete a pre-application.

Eligibility 

 

Accredited two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States that have designated a Goldwater Campus Representative with the Foundation may nominate up to four students per year. 

 

If one or more of the nominated students is a transfer student, a four-year school may nominate a fifth student. 

 

No direct student applications or nominations from campuses will be considered unless accompanied by a Goldwater Campus Representative.

 

To be eligible for a Goldwater Scholarship, a student must meet the following requirements: 

 

  • Be a full-time matriculated sophomore or junior pursuing a degree at an accredited 2- or 4-year institution of higher education during the 2022-2023 academic year.
  • Intend to pursue a research career in a natural science, mathematics, or engineering.
  • Have a college grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale 2, and  
  • Be a U.S. citizen or national from one of the 50 United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, the United States Virgin Islands, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Palau, or any other territory or possession of the United States; or a permanent resident.
  • A photocopy of a permanent resident’s Permanent Resident Card, also known as a Green Card, must be submitted.

 

NOTE: The Goldwater Foundation’s natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics fields and sub-fields are the same as those used by the National Science Foundation for its Graduate Research Fellowship Program. 

 

Chemistry, Computer and Information Sciences and Engineering, Engineering, Geosciences, Life Sciences, Materials Research, Mathematical Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, and Psychology are among them.

 

How to apply

 

To be considered for a Goldwater Scholarship nomination by your academic institution, you must first complete and submit a short student profile (name, email address, telephone number, etc.) and pre-application (year in school, major, GPA, brief career interest statement, anticipated highest degree, and potential recommendation letters) 

 

This  will help your campus’ Goldwater Representative determine the strength of your application. 

 

After submitting your pre-application and profile, you should hear from your Goldwater Campus Representative within a week.

Process of Nomination

 

To enter the national competition, applicants must be nominated by their schools.

 

Please read all application guidance before beginning the application process.

 

Students who want to be considered for a nomination must fill out a pre-application. The pre-application process is described in detail here.

 

  • Students submitting a preliminary application should contact potential recommenders.
  • Recommendations should come from faculty or research supervisors who are familiar with your potential for a career in math/science/engineering.
  • Following the nomination, students will be directed to provide a packet of information to recommenders and request letters from each.

 

What is the Barry Goldwater Scholarship worth?

 

Each scholarship covers eligible undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

 

What is the Deadline

 

The deadline for pre-applications is Monday, November 28, and the deadline for nominated students is Thursday, January 19, 2023.

Q; What is the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship?

A; The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is a prestigious postgraduate scholarship awarded to college sophomores and juniors from U.S. states that traditionally do not have a high representation in the fields of mathematics, natural sciences or engineering. 

The scholarship provides up to $7,500 per academic year for up to four years and is provided if there is clear evidence that they intend to conduct medical research. 

 

Q: Does the Goldwater Scholarship Foundation help students who want to do social and behavioral work?

A: The Goldwater Foundation does not support students interested in pursuing a career in social behavioral work; however, they do support students whose research addresses social behavioral questions from a neuroscience perspective.

 

Q: As a sophomore, I received a Goldwater Scholarship but did not receive all of my first-year funds. Can I carry these funds over to my second year of funding?

A: Scholarship funds that are not used during one academic year are not transferable to the following year.
