Palmetto Fellows Scholarship 2023 - How to Apply and What You Need to Know

The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Program is a merit-based program designed to recognize and encourage South Carolina’s most academically talented high school seniors to attend college in the state.

Its goal is also to keep talented minority students who would otherwise study outside of the state.

Half of the Scholarship is awarded during the fall semester and a half during the spring semester.

Palmetto Fellows may receive Scholarship funding for a maximum of eight full-time terms of study toward their first bachelor’s degree at an eligible four-year institution in South Carolina, assuming continued eligibility.

What is Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Program

The Palmetto Fellows Scholarship is a merit-based program established in 1988 to recognize and encourage academically gifted high school seniors to attend college in South Carolina.

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education oversees the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Program.

Palmetto Fellows are eligible for up to $6,700 in their freshman year and up to $7,500 in their sophomore, junior, and senior years.

Scholarship amount

The scholarship is not to exceed $6,700 per academic year(fall/spring semesters) for up to four years ($40,000), and may be renewed for an additional three years.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship, you must be:

Must be an undergraduate student
Must attend a university
Citizenship requirements: US
Must currently be a high school student
Must study full-time
Restricted to residents of South Carolina
Restricted to students studying in South Carolina
With no felony convictions
No subsequent or subsequent alcohol- or drug-related offenses
Must not be in arrears on any federal or state loans
Enroll in a degree-seeking program at a SC institution that qualifies.
Must meet the required Excellent Academic Progress

Freshman Requirements for Palmetto Fellows Scholarship

There are two ways for a student to meet the academic eligibility criteria for the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship:

At the end of the 10th, 11th, or 12th-grade academic year, you should be in the top 6%.
Rank can be used as an eligibility requirement for schools/home school associations that have an official policy on rank that has been reviewed by the SC Commission on Higher Education for compliance with the established Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Regulations.
Earn a 1200 (math and critical reading only) on the SAT or a 27 on the ACT (through the June test administration of the graduating year).
The ACT test score will be 25 starting in Fall 2023 and going forward.
Earn a 3.5 cumulative GPA (based on the S.C. Uniform Grading Policy) OR meet the alternate academic criteria eligibility requirements, regardless of rank:
Earn a 1400 on the SAT (math and critical reading only) or a 32 on the ACT (through the June test administration of the graduating year).
The ACT test score will be 31 beginning in Fall 2023 and continuing thereafter.
Achieve a cumulative GPA of 4.0. (based on the S.C. Uniform Grading Policy).

Transfer Students’ Eligibility Requirements

All general eligibility requirements must be met.
You must apply for a transfer of Palmetto Fellows through the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education.

Continuing Students’ Eligibility Requirements

All general eligibility requirements must be met.

Early Award Deadline: April 15

Late Award Deadline: June 30

Tips for winning the Palmetto Fellows Scholarship

Make sure you are eligible.
Fill out the application completely.
Submit your application before the deadline.
Take the SAT or ACT and arrange for the official results to be sent to each institution you are applying.
Request an official transcript from your current high school as soon as you have earned a minimum of one academic year of high school credit.
Write your essay carefully and submit it on time.
If you are a homeschooled student, submit proof of enrollment with your application.
Be sure to have an updated list of all activities and honors that are not already reflected on your transcript such as awards, offices held, community service, part-time work experience, etc.
Make sure your application is complete before you submit it because you will not be able to make changes after it has been submitted.
