Scholarship Eligibility

Before you submit an application for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, be sure that both you and the institution that nominated you satisfy the requirements listed below (Vanier CGS).

Study Program Eligibility

As a requirement for completion of the program, an eligible doctoral program must have a significant research component that results in the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that has been merit/expert-reviewed at the institutional level.
If they feature a strong autonomous research component, as indicated above, clinically-oriented programs of study, such as clinical psychology, as well as joint graduate research programs with a professional degree (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) are also eligible programs.

All prior doctoral-level studies, regardless of discipline, that began in Canada or overseas are taken into account when determining eligibility and are presumed to have been ongoing, full-time, and uninterrupted until the institution confirms otherwise (including the summer months, unless on official leave). Two months of part-time study will be treated as one month of full-time study by the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat).

Part-time students are required to describe their part-time studies in the Special Circumstances attachment. The transcripts must include the information.

In the same academic year, qualified candidates may apply to both the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship program and other agency-specific doctoral-level scholarship/fellowship programs (whether to the same or a different federal granting agency). This is allowed as long as the proposed research for each application is in line with the goals of the federal granting agency to which it is being submitted. Please take note that while eligibility requirements, evaluation standards, and competition deadlines vary, Vanier CGS applications are not taken into account for agency-specific doctorate award competitions. Applying for each program separately is required.

Application Processes:

Candidates must have their desired institution nominate them. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program does not accept direct applications. Applications for the Vanier CGS that are submitted through ResearchNet are initially sent to the Canadian institution that will be nominating the applicant.
Candidates should check with the administrator at the institution making the nomination to confirm any internal deadlines.

Scholarship Eligibility

Depending on the university and program, the Ontario Trillium Scholarship application date can change as early as September. For admission to the next autumn, spring, or winter semesters, qualified applicants are nominated at the winter session.
In order to be qualified for OTS, an applicant must

1. be a foreign student with a current student visa for Canada.

2. English proficiency at the time of application.

3. Intend to enrol in a full-time, doctoral-level academic program.

4. Hold an 8.0/10 or A- grade (80% on the Ontario scale) for both of the years of full-time study.
