About PB&J Scholarship

When Traven Watase graduated from Governor Wallace Rider Farrington High School in 2013, he established the inaugural PB&J Scholarship. When Traven was in high school, he struggled academically and did not have his parents’ full support. He transferred from Roosevelt High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii, before completing his studies at Governor Wallace Rider Farrington High School (Honolulu, HI).

He came to the conclusion that children who lack sufficient direction or experience extraordinary challenges are at a substantial disadvantage that few scholarships recognize. Most awards are based on academic achievement, financial need, or ethnicity. However, students who have faced obstacles in their life might not be able to meet merit-based standards, might have intermediate financial needs, and might not be eligible for ethnicity-based scholarships.

Traven made the decision to consume PB&J sandwiches as a result of this in order to save money on his budget so that he could pay a scholarship forward while he was still in his first year of college. Traven didn’t launch the scholarship because he was wealthy; rather, he did it because he was prepared to make a small sacrifice and offer what he could to aid someone who was facing difficulties similar to those he had.
